China just found 110 million tons of oil offshore! The discovery could reshape global energy.
China has uncovered a major energy jackpot in the form of the Huizhou 19-6 oil field, an offshore site with an estimated 110 million tons of oil reserves.
Located about 106 miles off the coast of Shenzhen in the South China Sea, this discovery marks the nation’s first large-scale integrated clastic oilfield found in deep to ultra-deep geological layers.
The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced this breakthrough as a significant step in the country’s push for energy independence and technological advancement in deep-sea exploration.
Despite the excitement, challenges loom. Drilling at such depths means contending with extreme temperatures, high pressure, and difficult geological conditions, particularly given the low permeability of clastic rock formations.
Yet, this find confirms the growing global potential of ultra-deep reserves, with experts noting that up to 60% of the world’s untapped resources may lie at these depths.
With over 8,000-meter-deep wells already drilled, China continues to push boundaries in energy technology—solidifying its place as a major player in the future of global oil and gas.
