After a two-year spike during the pandemic and national outrage over police accountability, Chicago began to see a decline in homicides in 2022.
Homicide and nonfatal shooting totals fell again in 2023, but the city was roiled by robbery and carjacking crews responsible for an overall uptick in violence.
The release of homicide victims’ names is delayed by two weeks to allow time for the victims’ families to be notified of a death by Chicago police.
The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.
“We cannot take our eyes off the ball,” Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. “We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime.”
While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.
These are the latest updates on gun violence in the city of Chicago in 2024.

For our purposes, we’re focusing on which cities have the highest rates of violent crimes — murder, aggravated assault, rape and robbery. We’re also excluding all cities under 10,000 in population; sorry, Industry.
Among the cities that remain, examining the total number of violent crimes produces a list along the lines of what you might expect, with all four of the 2 million+ cities coming in at Nos. 1-4 on the list, but two relatively small cities (Indianapolis and Baltimore) seem to be punching above their weight class.
Across the entire U.S., about 1.3 million violent crimes took place during the reporting period.
According to Safe and Sound Security, the chance of being a victim of violent crime in Chicago in 2024 is 1 in 186. This is a concerning statistic compared to other major cities like New York City and Los Angeles.
Englewood, a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, has a significant amount of criminal activity, especially violent crimes like robbery, assault, and murder.
To protect themselves from becoming victims, residents can take awareness and preventive measures. Community policing and personal safety workshops could be beneficial.
