The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plans to adjust its mask recommendations to advise COVID-19 vaccinated people to again wear masks indoors in certain situations, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The change in guidance comes after COVID-19 cases have risen nationwide, nearly tripling in the past two weeks as the delta variant sweeps the country.
More reports of breakthrough cases among fully vaccinated people have streamed in as the highly transmissible variant became the dominant strain in the U.S.
The CDC had previously loosened mask recommendations in May, saying that fully vaccinated individuals could go without a mask in most indoor and outdoor settings.
Last week, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told reporters there were no plans to adjust the agency’s guidance, adding that “we are always looking at the data as the data come in.”
