CDC Reports 1,048 New Monkeypox Cases, the Biggest One-Day Increase on Record MonkeypoxUp:
The U.S. CDC reported 1,048 new monkeypox cases on Wednesday (July 27), the biggest one-day increase ever recorded. It takes the national tally to 4,639, which is currently the highest total in the world.
incubation period for monkeypox — or the time it takes to develop symptoms following an exposure — is roughly one to two weeks. Typically, monkeypox infections start with flu-like symptoms, including the following:
- FeverÂ
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Swollen lymph nodes; this swelling may appear in multiple locations, such as the neck and armpit.
Then, the characteristic “pox” rashes begin to appear, usually around the face and in the oral cavity, and later, on the extremities, including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
These rashes can resemble those caused by the Varicella zoster virus, which causes chickenpox, and they can also look like those caused by certain sexually transmitted infections, such as syphilis and herpes.
