CDC Panel of Independent Vaccine Experts Skeptical of Fourth COVID-19 Shots
A fourth dose of a COVID-19 vaccine may not be the best way to combat SARS-CoV-2 going forward, a CDC panel of independent vaccine experts cautioned on Thursday.
The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, in a five-hour meeting Wednesday (April 20), largely agreed that repeatedly deploying COVID-19 booster shots isn’t a realistic goal and doesn’t make much sense.
Dr. Sarah Long, a committee member, said public health agencies need to abandon the idea that vaccines can prevent COVID-19.
“With the vaccines currently available, we should not chase the rainbows of hoping that those vaccines could prevent infection, transmission and even mild disease because we’ve learned that is just not possible,” said Long, a professor of pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine.
