91-year-old Loris Sinanian from Blairsville, Georgia has reportedly lost over six figures after being conned by someone posing as an old friend who wanted to repay a $100 debt, Atlanta News First reports.

After establishing contact with Sinanian, the scammer was able to gain remote access to his computer, and then made it appear as if he had accidentally sent Sinanian $100,000 rather than $100.

Over the course of 10 days, the scammer then persuaded Sinanian to withdraw $109,000 in cash from his bank accounts, stuff the cash into boxes of books and then ship the boxes to an unknown address in New York.

Says Sinanian,

“I don’t want to use profanities, but I was very unhappy I was stupid enough to continue.”

Debra Stokes, executive director of the Georgia Council on Aging, a state-funded senior advocacy group, told ANF that “there are hundreds of cases like that across the county,” and thousands of reported cases statewide each year.

In the its 2023 Elder Fraud Report, the FBI said that elders had lost $3.4 billion to scams alone, though the number most likely grossly underestimates the true scope of the problem.

An 85-year-old woman’s life savings was recently drained by fraudsters posing as JPMorgan and the US government. Annette Manes, a widowed social worker, was a victim of a scheme that drained $1.4 million over the course of 279 days, but JPMorgan refused to reimburse her.

Late last year, Françoise Schorosch fell victim to the “Hi dad” scheme where the scammers pose as an elderly person’s grandchild asking for help.

In Schorosch’s case, hackers were able to access her emails while she was in the process of buying her first home.

“I was sharing discussions about working with solicitors, surveyors and estate agents. I had been keeping him abreast of all of the financials, and getting his advice because this was my first purchase. I suspect that someone managed to access our email exchange and then reach out to him directly.”

By using Schorosch’s email address – but with “email.com” instead of “gmail.com” – the fraudsters were able to contact her dad without raising suspicion, ultimately convincing him to wire €7,000 or about $9,100 from Deutsche Bank to a Nationwide bank account.

Cesar Polanco, 59, was arrested by immigration officials after being paroled on Dec. 4 for the second-degree murder of Judith Guevara, the Boston Herald reported.

The 25-year-old — who was a month pregnant at the time — was left “massive facial injuries” after Polanco viciously clobbered her to death during a 2006 fight at their Lawrence home, which they shared with her 5-year-old son and 16-month-old daughter.

“The son witnessed Mr. Polanco beating his mother,” the parole board noted in a report, before proceeding to approve his release from prison after he had served just 17 years of his life sentence.

“Mr. Polanco expressed remorse for his actions and reminded the Board that he called the police himself following the offense and confessed,” the board added.

Polanco was granted release on a “home plan,” but never ended up seeing the streets — instead, he was held in custody while ICE took actions to detain him.

Exactly what will become of Polanco now that he is in the hands of immigration officials remains unclear.

The shocking parole was aided by the Harvard Law School’s Prison Legal Assistance Project (PLAP), which helps people serving life sentences for second-degree murders.

This was Polanco’s second attempt at parole after being denied the first time.

An attorney who supervises the PLAP program told the Herald outlet that Polanco was “responsibly discharged” by the parole board, saying it did its duty to “fairly consider parole petitions with fair regard to the petitioning prisoners, all consistent with public safety.”

PLAP added that the group “expected ICE would do its job,” too, and deport Polanco to the Dominican Republic.

ICE did not respond to request for comment at the time of publication.

Polanco’s arrest comes as the Trump administration follows through on a campaign promise to execute sweeping arrests and deportations of illegal immigrants, with the crackdown targeting sanctuary cities across the country.

Forth Worth Independent School District is investigating a social media post by a reported substitute teacher. The teacher apparently wrote that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement should visit the school where they work because it has “many students who don’t even speak English.”

“Y’all should come to Fort Worth, TX to Northside High School,” the post reads in response to an ICE post, according to a screenshot making the rounds on social media.

“I have many students who don’t even speak English, and they are in 10th-11th grade. They have to communicate through their iPhone translator with me. The @USEDGOV should totally overhaul our school system in Texas.”

In a statement on social media, Fort Worth ISD said they are aware of the post, which has “caused concern among” the school district.

“We take this matter very seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances and ensure appropriate actions are taken,” the statement reads.

The school district told NBCDFW that the teacher won’t be on campus during the investigation.

Since President Donald Trump, who campaigned on mass deportations of immigrants, took office last week, ICE has arrested nearly 1,000 immigrants. Trump authorized ICE to raid schools and churches, ending a policy that was put into effect in 2011A Chicago school said last week that they turned away ICE at their doors. However, ICE denied being there.

Clashes are raging between Israeli forces and the Palestinian resistance in Jenin and its refugee camp

The death toll from Israel’s brutal operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin and its refugee camp has risen to 13, as Palestinian Authority (PA) forces cooperate with Tel Aviv in the indiscriminate assault.

A young resistance fighter, Mohammad Shadi al-Sabah, was shot dead by PA troops in the Jenin camp late on 22 January, bringing the number of deaths to 13 in under 48 hours.

Israeli troops demolished a home in the town of Burqin, west of Jenin, on Wednesday night after besieging it for hours. The resistance fighters who were inside reportedly refused to surrender. Two fighters responsible for a shooting operation that assassinated three Israelis in Al-Funduq village earlier this month were killed.

Heavy clashes continued to rage in the area as well as in Jenin city and the camp, continuing into the next morning – with the Jenin Brigade of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement’s Quds Brigades announcing several operations against Israeli forces.

“Our fighters detonated a guided explosive device in a military vehicle in the Jalbuni axis, achieving confirmed injuries,” the Jenin Brigade said early on 23 January.

WXYZ Detroit

An 18-year-old man is in critical condition and a Detroit officer was recovering after police shot at two teens in a car Tuesday that partly dragged the officer while fleeing on the city’s west side, officials said.

Officers on a routine patrol first saw the two suspects shortly before midnight as sat in a parked, running car that was blocking a sidewalk on the 19300 block of St. Mary’s Street on the city’s northwest side, Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald told reporters during a briefing after the incident.

The 18- and 17-year-old suspects inside appeared to be stuffing something underneath a seat and refused to exit the car when officers asked them to, Fitzgerald said.

The occupants allegedly backed their car into another vehicle parked in a home’s driveway before driving forward into a DPD patrol car and dragging an officer who had been trying to open one of the doors.

Two officers fired numerous rounds at the pair, citing fears for their own safety, Fitzgerald said.

The suspects drove away, but police found the car a couple blocks away on Prevost Street shortly afterwards, he said.

Police also found the 18-year-old suspect blocks away from the scene with three gunshot wounds, including two to the arm and one to the chest, Fitzgerald said.

The 17-year-old suspect later turned himself in, a Detroit Police Department representative said in an email just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators questioned the teen and released him pending further investigation.

“We do believe both occupants are members of a local gang in this area,” he said. “I don’t even want to repeat the name of the gang, because it’s ridiculous.”

Fernando Villanueva-Galvez still hasn’t fully recovered from the police dog attack on Oct. 21, 2023, according to his Oakland attorney, Angel Alexander, whose law firm got the video from the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office.

She sued San Jose police on her client’s behalf last month.

The video shows officers sending in the dog, named Ronin, to search Villanueva-Galvez’s apartment on Northrup Street where the then 19-year-old is heard screaming in pain from the back room. Ronin’s handler, Officer Eliseo Anaya, calls off the dog five times, but the animal doesn’t heed the orders, the video shows.

Eventually, the officers move in closer to where Villanueva-Galvaz is in the hallway of his apartment. His face was streaming with blood. A chunk of his ear had been bitten off.

“His injuries were so horrific,” Alexander told KTVU. “Police dogs are not supposed to behave that way. They’re not supposed to attack your face.”

The San Jose police declined to comment on the lawsuit.

The city attorney’s office did not immediately respond for comment.

However, in police reports obtained by KTVU, Anaya wrote that he sent the dog in because Villanueva-Galvez had just stabbed someone and wouldn’t comply with orders to come out of his apartment.

In court documents in prior K-9 cases against the SJPD, city attorneys have argued that the officers’ actions were reasonable.

Anaya is the same officer who was cleared by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office in 2019 for the deadly shooting of 24-year-old Jennifer Vasquez, whom they mistakenly identified as an armed felon and chased until she crashed her car into a chain link fence.

A two-month KTVU investigation analyzing K-9 bite data among the Bay Area’s 25 largest police departments revealed major discrepancies between agencies.

Some departments routinely deploy police dogs to bite suspects, while other similar-sized departments virtually never use them.

The investigation found San Jose police led the pack with 167 bites over a five-year period from 2015 to 2020.

Richmond police had the second most bites – 84 in the same time period.

And in Antioch, a smaller city with fewer than 100 officers, police dogs bit people 49 times in just three years.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer said that he is investigating the alleged “debanking” of cryptocurrency firms, reaching out to venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and five crypto CEOs who have publicly raised concerns.

Debanking has become a flash point in the crypto space since Andreessen claimed on “The Joe Rogan Experience” in November that he knew 30 tech founders who had been the target of debanking — the closure of bank accounts that financial institutions consider risky, often with little or no notice.

Comer sent a letter to Andreessen, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Blockchain Association CEO Kristin Smith, Uniswap Labs CEO Hayden Adams, Lightspark CEO David Marcus and Payward CEO Dave Ripley, asking about their experiences with debanking.

“The Committee seeks to understand whether this pattern of debanking stems from financial institutions themselves or from government actors,” Comer wrote.

“The Committee seeks to ensure that entrepreneurs are not unfairly targeted and, by extension, that all Americans are able to participate in U.S. markets without fear of retaliation through illicit measures undertaken by financial institutions or federal regulators,” he continued.

Adams revealed in 2022 that JPMorgan Chase had closed his bank accounts with “no notice or explanation.” His company created the decentralized crypto exchange Uniswap.

“I know many individuals and companies who have been similarly targeted simply for working in the crypto industry,” he said in a post on the social platform X at the time. “Thanks for making it a personal.”

Marcus detailed a similar experience last April, saying the financial operations platform BILL informed his Bitcoin startup Lightspark that it could no longer service them due to its processing bank’s requirements and closed their account.

A man found guilty of attempting to traffic cocaine that was shipped to Chicago learned his sentence last week.

A judge sentenced 33-year-old Jose Ramirez-Arellano to 10 years in federal prison on Jan. 17. Ramirez-Arellano pleaded guilty last year to a federal drug charge.

His sentence stems from an incident that occurred in February 2022 when Ramirez-Arellano arranged to receive a package that contained about five kilograms of cocaine.

The package was shipped to his residence in Chicago from southern California.

The package was then intercepted by law enforcement agents, who replaced the real cocaine with fake cocaine. It was then delivered to Ramirez-Arellano’s home.

After receiving the package, Ramirez-Arellano took it to a hotel in downtown Chicago, where he was arrested.

Ramirez-Arellano also received a second shipment of about five kilograms of cocaine that same month.

Law enforcement seized two packages of bulk cash linked to Ramirez-Arellano, which contained about $43,550, prosecutors said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Parthum stated the following in the government’s sentencing memorandum.
