Now it’s time for our community to come together for our biggest event ever, The Hunt: Mega Edition, with a $1 million grand prize.*

The event will begin as a digital competition that challenges players to race against each other and test their skills.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, police said an off-duty officer was inside the Chick-fil-A at 569 Boylston Street when two people ran into the restaurant while being chased by a man with a knife who was attempting to stab the two people.

“The officer then instructed the man to drop the weapon, to which he did not comply,” Boston police Commissioner Michael Cox said. “The officer then discharged his weapon to stop the threat and the armed man was struck.

He was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced [dead]. The officer was transported to a hospital for evaluation, but at this time, there are no other reported injuries.”

Boylston Street between Dartmouth Street and Clarendon Street was closed until Saturday night in order for police to continue their investigation.

“This is a pretty tragic incident, Cox said. “We don’t look for loss of life and our condolences go out to the family of the individual. We are also proud our police officers, whether on-duty or off-duty, who activate themselves to help save lives.”

Cox told reporters that the officer is in stable condition without any life-threatening injuries.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden was also present at the news conference.

“We need the help of anybody who knows what happened here so we can get to the bottom of what happened in this very chaotic situation,” Hayden said.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was at the press conference as well and said her thoughts are with everyone who was impacted during the incident.

“I am very grateful for a quick response from all of our first responders here in such an active part of Boston,” Wu said. “We know any act of violence is deeply impactful.

We want to make sure that everyone knows the city has trauma services available for those who are victims of crime.”

An on-duty Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy in California was found unresponsive in the restroom of the Central Division Station—with a lighter in one hand and a glass pipe on the floor next to him.

He had overdosed on fentanyl that he confiscated earlier that day, believing a guy’s lie that it was just meth! Responding deputies had to use Narcan to save him, and an internal investigation led to his termination.

In August 2023, Morales confiscated a glass narcotics smoking pipe and issued a misdemeanor citation for the possession of narcotics paraphernalia. In his report, Morales lied, according to the sheriff’s office findings, when he said he “safely disposed of the glass pipe at the Central Area Station.” 

Instead, documents say Morales admitted to keeping the pipe and smoked methamphetamine residue from the pipe at his home three to four times over the course of two months. 

Morales said the use of methamphetamine “gave him the ‘energy’ he needed to write in-custody reports. 

On October 24, 2023, Morales conducted a suspicious suspect stop and in that encounter recovered narcotics that were believed to be methamphetamine. He issued a misdemeanor citation for possession of methamphetamine to the suspect. 

Hours later, Morales is seen on security camera footage at the sheriff’s office Central Area Station entering a public bathroom, closed to the public at the time.

Moments later, another deputy finds Morales unconscious on the floor of the bathroom in possession of the suspected meth he seized earlier the same day. 

The substance initially believed to be meth was fentanyl, according to the report, and Morales was suffering a fentanyl overdose. 

Deputies began life-saving measures including issuing multiple doses of naloxone, or Narcon, before transporting Morales to the hospital. 

CBS13 was on scene at the time outside of the station as the first reports about the incident were that Morales was exposed to chemicals, unintentionally. 

In the sheriff’s internal review, it was found that Morales “used his position of authority to confiscate narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia from members of the public and held them accountable for the violations.”

Police say an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of North Broad Street around 5:30 p.m. for a report of a man, later identified as 26-year-old Kyle Varney, “acting out of the ordinary and in need of evaluation.”

The 911 caller said no violence was happening and Varney did not have access to weapons. The call can be listened to here.

When an LPD officer got to the scene at 5:42 p.m., a woman can be seen on video running up to the officer and saying two family members were killed. The woman is also heard saying “he’s got a shotgun.” Screaming could be heard on the bodycam video a few seconds later.

The woman can be heard saying “he just shot her.” Police say Varney fired a shot at another woman at the scene.

Bodycam video shows the officer taking cover behind his patrol vehicle and firing three shots.

Police say Varney’s progress toward the woman stopped, and his weapon was dropped to the ground. The officer said Varney then ran to the back of the house.

Israel Stomps On Gaza Ceasefire Deal, Refuses Withdrawal From Philadelphi Corridor

Several recent reports say Israel has made extensive plans to resume its genocidal war on Gaza

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on 27 February that Tel Aviv will not withdraw its army from the Philadelphi corridor on the southern Gaza Strip’s border with Egypt, marking a stark violation of the ceasefire agreement signed last month.

“We also have information that Hamas is planning to attack soldiers and towns during the ceasefire,” Katz claimed during a meeting.

“The Philadelphia axis will remain a buffer zone, just as is the case in Lebanon and Syria,” the defense minister added, openly confirming that Israeli forces will not withdraw from the area. “I have seen with my own eyes a fair number of tunnels that penetrate Philadelphia, some of which were closed and others open,” Katz went on to say.

During the meeting with settlement council leaders, Katz said phase one of the ceasefire agreement is “complete.” He also said that Israel only agreed to a deal to return its captives, and that it is ready to return to war.

The Israeli Army Radio also reported on the same day that Tel Aviv “has backed down from its commitment to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor at the end of the first phase of the exchange deal.”

The victim, a 46-year-old woman, was treated for a stab wound to the head and later released from the hospital.

A 20-year-old Vernon Hills woman, Sashary Almanza, was arrested for allegedly stabbing her mother in a domestic battery Thursday morning.

Police found Almanza about 10 minutes after she fled the scene and recovered the suspected weapon, a kitchen knife.

Officers responded to a home in the 900 block of Jackson Court around 7:06 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a mother had been stabbed in the head by her daughter. 

Vernon Hills police found Almanza about 10 minutes later, roughly half a mile from the residence, and took her into custody without incident. Officers also recovered the suspected weapon, described as a kitchen knife, at the scene of the arrest, police said.

Investigators determined that the stabbing stemmed from an encounter in the home’s kitchen just before the 911 call.

Almanza was charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, both felonies. She remains in custody at the Lake County Jail following a detention hearing.

Almanza’s mother, 46, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with a stab wound to the head. She was treated for a cut and was later released.

Vernon Hills police were assisted in the arrest by officers from the Libertyville and Mundelein police departments.
