A soccer player was struck by lightning during a match over the weekend in Peru, killing him and wounding four other players in a horrific incident caught on a live video stream of the game.

The lightning bolt struck José Hugo De la Cruz Meza, 39, a defender for the Chocca Family team, as players and referees were walking off the field due to worsening weather at the Coto Coto stadium near the city of Huancayo on Sunday, according to Peru’s state-run Andina news agency.

De la Cruz died immediately from the strike, Peruvian news outlets reported, before he was taken to a local hospital.

The team’s goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, De la Cruz’s cousin, was left in serious condition, and three other players sustained burns.

DailyMail.com – The Litoral Penitentiary in the coastal city of Guayaquil has been the site of frequent riots and mass killings, including one in 2021 that left 119 inmates dead.

The National Service of Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders, which oversees the prison system, said in a statement that detainees were involved in a brawl in one of the jail’s cell blocks.

Security forces guard prisoners who were forced to lie on a courtyard at the Litoral Penitentiary in Ecuador following Tuesday’s fight that left at least 15 inmates dead.

Images taken inside the prison showed law enforcement officials standing next to the body of a slain prisoner lying on the roof. Shirtless inmates were seen in handcuffs and lying on the ground of a courtyard as law enforcement agents carried out searches.

Aerial video footage showed authorities bringing out dead bodies before they were taken to the medical examiner’s office.

The sister of one of the victims told Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo that the death toll could be much higher.

‘They threw grenades at them, they decapitated them, they cut them up. The police themselves, while they were there (outside the prison), showed me the videos that show (the bodies) in the upper part; they are all lying there,’ she said.

‘That is why we came here, because they already said that there are not 17 or anything, there are like 35, 40 dead. That is what they gave information inside (the prison) itself.’

The mass killing is bound to agitate Ecuador’s presidential race, where the law-and-order incumbent, Daniel Noboa, has made improving security, including inside detention facilities, a top priority in his bid to seek re-election next year.

Ecuador’s prisons have become among the deadliest in Latin America as overcrowding, corruption and weak state control have allowed gangs connected to drug traffickers in Colombia and Mexico to proliferate.

Many are heavily armed with weapons smuggled in from the outside and continue to organize criminal activity from behind bars.

The Litoral Penitentiary currently houses about 10,000 inmates – or double its capacity.

A man accused of a stabbing spree in the Chinatown-International District(CID) appeared in court, where a judge found probable cause for five counts of first-degree assault.

The judge set the suspect’s bail at $2 million, citing a substantial likelihood that he could commit a violent crime in the community. Police reported that robbery was the motive in only one of the stabbings, while the other four appeared to be completely random.

“He was just cold as ice running around stabbing people,” said Kevin Greiner. “I see a man stab him in the back with a big knife, the knife stuck in his back. I’m freaking out – my friend is on the ground dying, and I don’t want to lose him.”

SPD Deputy Chief Eric Barden said a suspect was located near the scene and taken into custody without incident.Detectives with the homicide/assault unit were working to identify the suspect, who is between 30-40 years old. Barden said a “weapon was recovered from within the vicinity” of the suspect, and that another knife was still in one of the victims that was taken to the hospital.

A total of 10 people were stabbed in the CID in about a roughly 37-hour period, according to Barden.

Wral.com – An elderly couple was murdered at their home last week near Gaston. Their neighbor who’s also related to the victims has been charged with their murders.

Michael Powell, 72, and his 70-year-old wife Carolyn died after suffering “gunshot wounds to the head from a shotgun at point blank range,” the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office told news outlets and wrote Nov. 8 in a social media post.

Deputies responded late Nov. 7 to the shooting in the Gaston area, near the Virginia border and a roughly 90-mile drive northeast from Raleigh. Investigators said the person accused of killing the husband and wife left the scene in their stolen truck.

The next day, the sheriff’s office said the couple’s truck was spotted outside a hotel. Deputies also arrested Butcher, who was charged with one count of felony larceny and two counts of first-degree murder. The sheriff’s office said the motive behind the deadly shootings wasn’t clear. As of Nov. 8, the case remained under investigation.

“It’s a terrible situation,” Maj. Jimmy Barmer told WRAL.

“Anybody that would go out and take two individuals’ lives — much less two individuals in their 70s, who’s lived a prosperous life, who to my understanding has never caused any harm with anyone — to go out and take their life is brutal.”

Butcher, who is from Gaston, is scheduled to appear in court later in November. He “received no bond on the first-degree murder charges” and a “$35,000 secured bond for the motor vehicle larceny charge,” deputies said.

“My thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt sincerity goes out to the family of the victims during this tragic time,” Smith wrote on Facebook. The sheriff’s office didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Nov. 11.

Source – National advocates for tighter campaign finance laws are expressing cautious optimism that, if elected, Vice President Kamala Harris will make the issue a top priority, even as “dark money” groups spend millions boosting her campaign.

But, winning the White House won’t be enough. To get a shot at enacting even modest campaign finance and disclosure changes, Democrats will also need to sweep control of both chambers in November, according to leaders at watchdog groups that track the influence of money in federal elections.

“Without control of the White House and majorities in both chambers of Congress, many congressional Democrats see campaign finance reform as a major uphill battle,” Michael Beckel, the senior research director at Issue One, a bipartisan political reform nonprofit, said. Until then, he added, “many political operatives are all too happy to fight fire with fire.”

Meanwhile, leaders at other government watchdog groups are taking comfort in remarks from Democratic congressional leaders. In recent weeks, Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and House Minority Whip Katherine M. Clark, D-Mass., have told reporters their party plans to make passing a sweeping election integrity and campaign finance bill dubbed the “Freedom to Vote Act” by its supporters one of its first priorities next Congress. Doing so might require changing the Senate’s filibuster floor procedures, however.

“I think we have every indication that getting big secret money out of politics while simultaneously passing pro-voter reforms will continue to be a top priority, should there be a pro-reform trifecta next year,” Aaron Scherb, the senior director of legislative affairs at Common Cause, said.

If enacted, the Freedom to Vote Act — which includes a broad range of election administration and voter registration provisions and is supported by civil rights and government watchdog groups — would mark the biggest step in campaign finance law in two decades.

Among other provisions, the bill would establish new rules intended to ensure political action committees and other outside groups don’t coordinate with candidates’ campaigns. It also would strengthen Federal Election Commission enforcement procedures to investigate potential election laws violations and establish a voluntary, small-donor matching program for House elections.

Those campaign finance provisions are key, said Daniel Weiner, the director of elections and government at Brennan Center for Justice. “I am very confident that if there is an opportunity to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, it will include strong campaign finance reforms in it,” he added.

Dallasnews.com – The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for mostly all of North Texas, including D-FW, until 9 p.m. Friday.

A series of cold fronts are moving across the state this week and into the weekend, significantly dropping temperatures and even bringing snow-lined streets and icy conditions to the Lone Star State. However, for a lot of Texas it just means thunderstorms and reprieve from 80-degree days.

This comes as severe thunderstorms, several showers along with a cold front are forecast for the area throughout the day and evening.

Heavy rainfall could result in flooding, especially in the northwest, the advisory warned. Rainfall of 1-2 inches is expected with isolated amounts up to 3 inches.

Wet conditions are only expected to last through Friday with the cold front anticipated to “end storm chances from west to east this evening through the overnight hours,” the advisory said.

“A band of severe thunderstorms can also be expected to sweep across western Texas ahead of a potent cold front.

Much of the central to southern High Plains will come under an increasing threat of high winds as well especially by this evening into Friday morning when the low pressure system deepens most rapidly,” a National Weather Service forecast warns.

“The main threats with this activity will be 1 inch hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado,” an advisory from NWS-Fort Worth said.

UPDATE: On July 7, 2024, police say 17-year-old Adiah Roberson shot and killed San Antonio, Texas Sonic manager, 33-year-old Daniel Shrewsbury, following an argument. Roberson and two others were denied food because they were using fake money.

Police say as Shrewsbury tried to take a picture of their license plate, 27-year-old Joshua Joseph told him he was going to get shot. That’s when police say Roberson exited the vehicle and opened fire on Shrewsbury, who died on scene.

Joseph was arrested in August and charged with murder.

A $5,000 reward was offered for any information leading to Roberson’s capture. U.S. Marshals confirmed that a tip led investigators to the Dallas apartment complex.

On October 22, around 1:30 p.m., the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force arrested Roberson in a Dallas apartment complex parking lot. She was booked into the Dallas County jail on the charges of murder and forgery.

Investigators believe Roberson went from San Antonio to Austin and then to Dallas. It’s still unclear how long she had been staying in Dallas.

Roberson’s bond is set at $520,000. She is waiting to be transferred down to San Antonio.
