Canada Secretly Tracked 33MN Phones since Covid Outbreak
Canada’s Public Health Agency (PHAC) has admitted to covertly tracking 33 million devices during the pandemic to assess “the public’s responsiveness during lockdown measures” (National Post citing Blocklock’s Reporter).
A contract awarded to Telus’ Data For Good program expired in October, but for months it had helped garner “de-identified and aggregated” analysis. However, a PHAC spox has confirmed plans to continue tracking the population for up to FIVE YEARS.
Pandemic Surveillance author David Lyon believes “the Canadian public will find out about many other such unauthorized surveillance initiatives before the pandemic is over – and afterwards.”
