According to the new recall alert, Tri-Union Seafoods is cautioning consumers that a third-party distributor “inadvertently” shipped quarantined canned tuna that was associated with a previous recall in February 2025.

A recall is underway for canned tuna sold in nine states, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Monday. Tri-Union Seafoods initally recalled the cans in February 2025 due to a packaging defect of their “easy open” pull tabs.

Over time, this defect may compromise the product seal, causing it to leak or become contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that can cause botulism, which is a serious form of food poisoning. The recalled cans were quarantined, but a third-party distributor accidentally shipped them.

Look for the recalled tuna cans in your pantry. The FDA is urging customers not to use them—even if they don’t look or smell spoiled. Instead, return them for a refund or throw them away.

According to the FDA, the impacted products were distributed to retail stores as follows:

  • Meijer – Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin
  • Giant Foods – Maryland and Virginia
  • Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions – California
