Authorities are investigating the death of a 7-month-old boy after the infant was found unresponsive
Authorities are investigating the death of a 7-month-old boy after the infant was found unresponsive in a vehicle on October 16, 2025.
According to Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler, Deputy Coroner Rosalie Clements was called to the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia after child was discovered unresponsive after being left inside a vehicle. The infant later died at the hospital according to Lee County Sheriff’s Office Captain Eddie Burgess.
The victim was identified as 7-month-old Novanni Truvan Simmons.
Burgess said deputies were called to Phoebe after Novanni had been brought in from a business on Ledo Road.
Lee County Coroner Hill Mackey later confirmed that the child was brought from the Kia dealership, where the Novanni’s mother was employed.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Albany Police Department once Novanni arrived at the hospital.
Mackey confirmed the Novanni’s death and said the body was sent for an autopsy on October 17. The cause of death remains pending.
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler says death investigations involving children can take a long time.
“People get upset because they think after the autopsy you should have an answer, if there is not any trauma to the child or injuries to the child, then a lot of time, you got to wait on tox and the histology, all of that, to come in and see what happened,” Fowler said.
On November 3, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) arrested Novanni’s mother, 22-year-old Nylah Simmons.
Simmons now faces second degree cruelty to children and murder charges. She is currently being held in the Lee County Jail.
