As the H5N1 virus spreads throughout the region, tens of thousands of birds, primarily pelicans, and at least 716 sea lions have perished in protected zones around Peru.
In November, birds in Peru’s northern region were the first to be infected with the virus. Since then it has killed 63,000 birds.
