Goplin killed his mother, Susan Reece, on Halloween 2021. Her body was found the next day during a welfare check by the police. Police said Susan Reese, 63, died of stab wounds. Officers conducted a sweep of the home, finding a folding knife with blood and hair on it.
They also noted the victim had defensive wounds.
Antigo Chief of Police Dan Duley says he was relieved and proud of the jury for coming together to convict Goplin.
The department responded fast to the crime and arrest was made quickly. Multiple police departments were involved in solving this case. Chief Duley says this case was about family.
He says Goplin’s two sisters were very much involved and provided lots of information to the police.
“With this verdict, it’s certainly going to help with some closure for them and be able to move on, and really start to heal. Well, start their process of healing as they move forward,” says Chief Duley.
This is the first homicide case for Antigo in more than 30 years. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
