An off-duty Chicago firefighter was shot Wednesday morning while confronting suspects during an attempted robbery in the Bronzeville neighborhood of the South Side.
The 40-year-old off-duty firefighter was inside a home in the 500 block of East 38th Place when he noticed three people attempting to break into his parked car, according to the Chicago Police Department.
When he went outside to confront them, one of the suspects began firing in his direction. The firefighter received gunshot wounds throughout his body and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, officials said. Police stated that his condition has since “stabilized.”
Following the shooting, two of the suspects fled the scene in a silver SUV, while the third escaped.
No one is in custody. Area One detectives are conducting an investigation.
Four bullet holes were found in the front glass door of a nearby townhouse. The driver’s side passenger window of a Dodge Durango parked on the street was smashed. The vehicle’s back window displayed several Chicago Fire Department stickers.
