RawNews1st – One dead, several critical after crash near Ball High School in Galveston. Galveston Police said a suspected drunk driver who was speeding ran a stop sign and broadsided a Jeep that had had several people inside.
A teen boy was killed and several people were taken to UTMB, many in critical condition, Friday (9/2/2022) night.
The crash happened at the intersection of 41st Street and Avenue O at about 6 PM across from Galveston Ball High School.
Galveston Police confirmed that one passenger, a male teen, was pronounced deceased on the scene and all others were transported to the Trauma Center at John Sealy Hospital at UTMB Health in Galveston.
Investigators believe alcohol is a contributing factor and charges are forthcoming, Galveston Police Detective Derek Gaspard said.
Members of the Galveston Police Traffic Safety Unit, Accident Reconstruction Team, Criminal Investigations Division, and Agents with the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission were all a part of the investigation.
Witness accounts to police said a white Toyota SUV was speeding westbound on Avenue O and struck a Jeep traveling Northbound on 41st Street.
It was unconfirmed how many people were injured in the crash. Gaspard said several were in critical condition and others were listed in stable condition.
The intersection was closed for the investigation until 10:45 PM, when the two vehicles involved were taken from the scene.
Galveston Police said more information would be released on Saturday.
