A suspected car thief escaped arrest by jumping on the hood of a getaway car

During a chase in the River North neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, a suspected car thief escaped arrest by jumping on the hood of a getaway car.

Around 2:45 p.m., police officers observed several suspects attempting to steal a white Jeep in the 300 block of West Erie Street, according to officials.

When officers approached, one of the suspects fled and jumped onto the hood of a Lincoln sedan being used as a getaway vehicle, according to police.

As he sped away from the scene with the suspect still on the hood of his car, the driver of the sedan collided with a Chicago police sergeant.

According to police, the police sergeant was not injured and refused treatment at the scene.

Nobody is being held.
