According to Chicago police, the shooting happened just before 1:15 p.m. outside of Higgins Funeral Home in the area of South Leyden Avenue and East 138th Street, near the Dolton line.
Jimmie Higgins has owned the funeral home for nearly 15 years and said he never expected anything like this to happen.
“It’s one thing to be a funeral home owner, but it’s another thing when you know the family personally,” said Higgins. “This is a good family.”Read more: Latest Chicago news headlines
Higgins said services were wrapping up for a man, a veteran in his 80s, when funeralgoers were preparing to leave for the burial site. He said his staff did not witness the shooting firsthand.
