A new species of shark in the Gulf of Mexico, named Mollisquama mississippiensis

Scientists from NOAA have discovered a new species of shark in the Gulf of Mexico, named Mollisquama mississippiensis or the American pocket shark.
Measuring just 14 centimeters, about the size of a human hand, it is only the second pocket shark ever recorded.
What makes this species remarkable is its bioluminescence: it has photophores, or light-producing organs, scattered across its body and special pockets near its gills that release glowing fluid.
Researchers believe the glow could help attract prey, provide camouflage, or enable communication, highlighting the mysteries of deep-sea biodiversity.
