A man and a woman were discovered unconscious in a vehicle in Elmhurst on Friday morning.
At around 3 a.m., two Elmhurst officers, Officer Kuper and Officer Wiegele, were dispatched to Roosevelt Road near York Street for a vehicle stopped in the westbound lanes facing the wrong way, according to police.
When officers arrived, they discovered a male driver and a female passenger in the front seats, both unconscious.
According to police, the vehicle was not involved in a traffic accident.
Officers discovered evidence that both occupants had overdosed on opiates.
According to police, the occupants were given NARCAN doses.
Within moments, the man regained consciousness. The officer administered additional doses to the woman until EMTs arrived.
Paramedics then transported the two to the hospital.
The officers discovered powder capsules inside the vehicle that tested positive for the presence of fentanyl, according to police.
The driver and passenger of the vehicle were treated and released from the hospital.
During the investigation, police discovered that the couple purchased and consumed the drug in Chicago just before driving on the expressway toward Elmhurst.
The 35-year-old driver was charged with illegal possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated, and improper stopping on a highway.
Additional charges are being considered.
