Authorities who carried out the arrest found a briefcase full of cash, as well as multiple USB drives.

In a statement posted on social media, Patel said the suspect, identified as John Daghita, was arrested Wednesday during a joint operation between the FBI and French authorities.

The arrest was carried out by the elite tactical unit of the French Gendarmerie, with assistance from the force’s International Cooperation Team Serious Crime Unit in Saint Martin and the Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale based in Guadeloupe.

Officials have not yet released details about how the alleged theft occurred or how the funds were traced.

Patel praised the coordination between U.S. and French law enforcement agencies, highlighting the role of international partnerships in tracking financial crimes.

“FBI will continue working 24/7 with our international partners to track down, apprehend, and bring to justice those who attempt to defraud American taxpayers—no matter where they try to hide,” Patel said.
