A body was recovered from Lake Michigan Thursday morning near Foster Beach, where a woman was last seen Wednesday night.
Around 8:30 p.m., a witness reported seeing the 19-year-old woman struggling in the water before sinking in the 5200 block of North Lake Shore Drive.
The dive team of the Chicago Fire Department paused the search Wednesday night and resumed it at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Officials have not stated whether the recovered body was that of the missing swimmer.
Area Three detectives are looking into it.
Last summer, after three drownings in two days, Chicago officials pleaded with boaters and swimmers to “please be responsible” while on the water. Recently, a 7-year-old boy drowned in Lake Michigan near Northwest Indiana.
According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, a nonprofit dedicated to drowning prevention, six people have drowned in Lake Michigan so far in 2023, more than any other Great Lake.
Two of the six drowned near Chicago, and another in suburban Waukegan.
