The Malibu area this year has been hit hard by extreme weather events, including the Palisades Fire and recent mudslides.
According to the USGS, the quake hit about 6.8 miles northwest of Malibu and 8.4 miles from Westlake Village. The earthquake also had a depth of about 9.5 miles.
A USGS map shows shaking was felt in multiple Ventura County cities, including Port Hueneme, Oxnard, Camarillo and Simi Valley.
In Los Angeles County, the map indicates some shaking was felt in Long Beach, farther up north in Porter Ranch and as far east as Whittier.
A second magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck just before noon, with a magnitude 3.2 earthquake recorded two minutes later in the same area.
A third preliminary magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck just before 2 p.m.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.
