Officials said the boy shot and killed his friend, despite initial reports that the victim accidentally shot himself while playing with the gun.

The young teen was arrested and faces second-degree murder charges following the 11-year-old’s death in Newburgh on Thursday morning, WABC reported, citing police.

A gun was recovered from the scene and three juveniles of interest were identified after police swarmed the site.

The victim has not been named, and the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet known.

So far, officials have not released any particulars of the circumstances around the shooting, although residents in the area said they heard the children were playing together when the shooting took place.

“They are good kids. Good kids. I love them so much,” Newburgh resident Elizabeth Cruz said.

Newburgh is located in Orange County, directly across the Hudson River from Beacon.
