Texas – After about a 12-second shootout on the evening of July 13, a Salem detective was wounded, shot in the ankle, a Salem firefighter and paramedic cross-trained with SWAT was injured in the face, arms, and torso from flying shrapnel, and a 16-year-old shooting suspect was dead.
Police had obtained a warrant for the arrest of Robert Brown. They said they had determined he was the suspect in a March 18 shooting near the Salem Center Mall that left another teenager wounded.
They had also suspected him in a June 13 shooting in the parking lot next to Columbia Bank. A man had been shot and wounded there.
On the night of Brown’s shootout with police, detectives had tracked him to a house at 4942 Oak Park Drive NE.
He knew someone who lived at the home, police said, and officers and SWAT staged nearby, ready to take him into custody.
They said they believed he was armed and posed a threat to the community.
Upon executing their plan, three unmarked police cars surrounded a red car parked in front of the home. Inside were Brown and three others.
Brown sat in the back seat behind the driver.
Police deployed two flash bangs, and then they said Brown ducked out of sight and then reappeared firing a handgun.Three officers returned fire.
Officer Brian Frazzini fired his rifle 11 times from the front passenger seat of the car in front of Brown’s.Cpl. Adam Waite fired his rifle from the driver’s seat three times through the front windshield.
Officer Ryan Morris fired his handgun six times from the car that had blocked Brown’s from the side.
The DA’s office said all the involved officers wore tactical uniforms that were clearly marked with badges and the word “POLICE.”
A resident across the street said he could clearly hear police give commands and identify themselves, the DA’s office said.
His court appearance on the charges is set for Monday, July 25.
