Fox32Chicago – A 19-year-old man was charged in connection with the shooting of a Cicero police officer over the weekend.
Giovanni A. Saldivar was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated battery, and aggravated discharge of a firearm, according to a press release from Cicero officials.
Two Cicero police officers were fired at by someone in the area of 35th Street and 61st Court around 12:45 a.m., and one officer was hit and taken to Loyola Hospital. The officer, a 29-year-old sergeant, was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon in good condition.
“We will not tolerate these kinds of crimes in Cicero and they will be investigated quickly and efficiently with the safety of our residents [as] our number one priority,” said Town President Larry Dominick in a statement.
The officers had initially approached a car after noticing it was illegally double-parked in the roadway. Officers told the driver to move their car and began to drive away.
Police said Saldivar was speaking to an occupant of the double-parked car and fired shots at the officers.
The 29-year-old sergeant was hit in the back. The other officer present was not injured.
A judge ruled on Monday that Saldivar be detained as he awaits trial.
