An elderly woman has been arrested after she called to report that she had shot her caretaker.
According to court documents, on Jan. 11, around 9:54 p.m., Knox County 911 received a call from Zella Paul, 78, telling dispatch that she was armed and was going to shoot her caretaker.
When officers arrived at the trailer park on Waco Street, police found Paul outside with her hands in the air and another female who had been shot inside the home.
According to the police, Paul’s caretaker had been shot in the leg and was airlifted to the UK Medical Center for treatment. She is stable at this time.
Paul told police that her caretaker had been in her face and cursing, so she “pulled her gun out and shot her.”
When police interviewed Paul’s caretaker, she said that she had gone over to wash Paul’s dishes when Paul “went crazy on her and shot her.”
After detectives obtained a search warrant, court documents state that a loaded .38 caliber handgun was found on the kitchen table. As a result, police took Paul into custody and charged her with attempted murder.
Corbin Police added that the investigation is ongoing, and if evidence of the castle doctrine were applicable, Paul would not have been arrested and charged.
