Police say a husband and wife were arrested and accused of dealing hundreds of counterfeit pills.
The Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) completed a drug trafficking investigation leading to the arrests of 56-year-old Larry Ward Jr. and 51-year-old Dawnya Ward.
Police say the Ward’s were identified as suspected retail distributors of various illegal controlled substances. JNET was granted a search warrant to search their residence on Union Street. After the search Columbus police arrested the couple.
Police say they found suspected meth, fentanyl, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and digital scales. They added that nearly 200 suspected counterfeit Oxycodone pills were found. They later field-tested positive for fentanyl. The total street value for the pills is about $3,700.
“We want to make sure the public understands that these pills are out there and harm can come by taking them,” said Columbus police Lt. Matt Harris.
Following the bust Dawnya ward reportedly admitted to dealing hundreds of fake pills
“That’s why it’s important to get these suspects off the streets because it’s our understanding hundreds of these pills were sold here in Columbus,” said Harris.
Because just a tiny amount of fentanyl, enough to fit on the tip of a pencil can be fatal, DEA testing shows that six out of ten fentanyl laced prescription pills contain a potentially lethal dose.
“These are the facts. Last year the DEA and our partners seized over 58 million fake pills containing fentanyl,” said DEA assistant special agent in charge Mike Gannon.
