According to State Police, they were contacted at 3:50 Sunday about a possible plane crash. Search efforts by the Virginia State Police, Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, and Fire-Rescue crews immediately got underway by ground and air across the area.
Wintergreen Fire & Rescue was also called out for the crash. Other agencies included on the call included: Wilson Fire Department, Raphine Fire Department, Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport and Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
Shortly before 8 p.m., first responders on foot were able to find the crash site and search efforts were ended. No survivors were found at the location.
The crash site was located in mountainous terrain near the George Washington National Forest near Montebello, Virginia, NORAD said.
Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith said they don’t deal with these types of incidents often and the mountainous terrain is especially posing a challenge to the search efforts.
“It was kind of tense there for a while, figuring out where we needed to go. There’s no quick way to get in the mountain. It’s wilderness. It’s extremely rough. It’s extremely steep. It took about 3 and a half hours to get in from the road, so it’s very far into the mountain,” Smith said.
