A husband and wife are facing charges after police say they neglected a “pony” that was in their care.
In a statement released to the public on Saturday, Carroll Township Police Department says the station received a complaint about a horse’s care back on Nov. 21 of 2022.
Following the report, officers say they coordinated with the Humane Department and investigated the home where the pony was.
Authorities say that’s when they discovered that the horse was lying down and not able to stand up, requiring “immediate medical attention.”
The horse’s injury was due to untrimmed and “excessively long” hooves.
Officers say contact was then made with the horse’s owner, 52-year-old Eric Witmer, who told police that he attempted to reach out to a farrier to have the horse’s hooves trimmed, but none of those individuals returned his calls.
Later, on Nov. 23 of 2022, a search warrant was conducted at the Witmer residence, where 44-year-old Claudia Witmer and Eric Witmer showed officials that the pony’s hooves were trimmed following the encounter on Nov. 21.
However, a Human Officer stated that medical treatment was still needed for the horse due to the animal showing “signs and symptoms of pain and distress along with permanent bone damage.”
The horse was then transported to a nearby facility for further evaluation and treatment.
