Scammers posing as lawyers or public officials working for Kane County judges during Zoom court calls have been reported to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office on multiple occasions.
The scammer sends messages to people via the Zoom court call chat feature, asking them to call him.
During the call, the impersonator requests photocopies of the caller’s driver’s license, bank statements, and paystubs.
This individual then informs the caller that making a payment via mobile banking apps such as Cash App, Zelle Pay, Apple Pay, and/or gift cards will assist them in resolving their case.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, this person is a con artist and is not employed by Kane County or any of its judges.
The Sheriff’s Office recommends the following precautions to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft or fraud:
- Always confirm who you are speaking with. Scammers frequently pose as representatives of organizations you are familiar with.
- Scammers will instruct you on how to pay.
- Scammers rush in and demand payment right away.
The reports of scams are being investigated. Anyone with information about this person’s identity should contact the Kane County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 444-1103.
