At the Lululemon Athletica Store in Bethesda, Maryland, the daytime manager, Rachel Oertli, arrived to find the door open. She asked a customer waiting outside of an adjacent store to enter Lululemon with her.
Upon entering, they noticed signs of a struggle and found the previous night’s manager, Jayna Murray, in the back; she had a rope around her neck and was covered in blood.
Brittany Norwood, a store employee, was bound with zip ties and had wounds on her body. Her pants had cuts in the crotch area. They called 911.
Brittany Norwood was rushed to an area hospital, where police interviewed her. She told police when they were closing the store when two men entered.
Norwood said the men attacked and sexually assaulted both her and Jayna.
Doctors determined Norwood had not been sexually assaulted. They also determined her wounds were all superficial.
The medical examiner determined Jayna Murray had not been sexually assaulted.
After five interviews, detectives learned Norwood made up the story about the attackers and staged the scene.
During the night shift, Murray learned Norwood stole a pair of leggings. She explained to Norwood the store policy was to report it to upper management.
The two women closed the store as normal; 15-minutes later, Norwood called Murray back to the store saying she forgot her wallet. Once inside the store, Norwood attacked Murray.
The attack lasted for over 20-minutes. After, Norwood inflicted wounds to herself to make it seem she had been attacked and zip-tied herself in the bathroom.
On March 18, 2011, Norwood was arrested in a police interview. Her trial took place in November 2011.
