Police responded to the report of a vehicle that hit a pedestrian near Bullard Avenue and Catalina Drive, south of Indian School Road, around 9:00 a.m. Officers arrived and found 71-year-old Thomas Stenoien and his dog, 11-year-old Judge, dead at the scene.
Officers say the driver, Joy Joyner, left the area after the crash. Witnesses and evidence from the scene showed that a silver Toyota Prius took off from the scene.
Additionally, witnesses told investigators that the Joyner was driving “at least 80mph in 45mph zone.”
Court paperwork also detailed that a short time after the crash happened, an off-duty fire department employee noticed a car matching the description of Joyner’s car.
The off-duty employee alleged that there was extensive damage to the front of the car and the passenger and was parked in a Walmart parking lot just about a mile from the crash site.
Parts at the crash site matched up to the car that appeared to have been left abandoned in the retail store’s parking lot.
Detectives also gathered surveillance video from a nearby tire shop that showed someone turning into the parking lot on Indian School Road.
The footage also showed that a woman, who police believe is Joyner was seen leaving in a black sedan.
Further evidence pinpointed Joyner, including cellphone records and witness descriptions.
