Authorities say Chia, 73, who was arrested on suspicion of hiring someone to kill his girlfriend, a prominent San Francisco Bay Area dentist, died by suicide while in police custody. The fatal shooting of 60-year-old Lili Xu in August 2022 in Oakland was believed to be a robbery that ended with a homicide.
Investigators alleged that her longtime companion hired a 33-year-old man to kill Xu. Both men were arrested Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, on murder charges. The next day the older man was found dead inside a holding cell at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Alameda County, Calif.
