TOLEDO, OH – Toledo police were present gas station as a 74-year-old man was fatally shot nearby. The shooting occurred March 10 at the Mobil station, Central and Detroit avenues.
Police said that gang task force detectives stopped a man carrying and consuming an open bottle of liquor in a gas station parking lot. While they were attempting to ID the suspect, a vehicle drove by and fired rounds into the gas station parking lot.
The detectives released the man drinking the liquor and immediately chased the suspect that had opened fire.
After a vehicle and foot pursuit, the 15-year-old suspect was found hiding with a semi-automatic rifle. During the pursuit, a 911 caller reported that a 74 year-old man had been shot by one of the bullets the 15 year-old fired.
The 15 year-old was arrested and charged with murder and felonious assault. John Toyer, Jr., 74, was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where he died. Kevin Taylor, Jr., 15, appeared later in Lucas County Juvenile Court on charges of murder and two counts of felonious assault on a police officer.
