Five people, including a police officer, were injured early Friday in a house fire in Oxford, Massachusetts.
“Police officers were first on scene and found a condition where there was fire from all four sides of the building and occupants were attempting to get out,” Oxford Fire Chief Laurent McDonald said.
A police officer who arrived at the scene was injured while trying to help the man, who suffered second- and third-degree burns.
The police officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
“Usually people are sleeping. If somebody didn’t wake them up we would have had fatalities here,” McDonald said. “The fire was heavily advanced by the time the crews arrived.”
The fire grew to three alarms and destroyed the home, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A woman and two teenage children smelled smoke and were able to get out of the burning home.
A man in his 30s who was trapped in the home jumped from the second floor of the residence.
