Canada sets aside $31.2bn to compensate Indigenous children
The Canadian government will finally begin compensating Indigenous families after the protracted lawsuit involving some 55k children is settled, officials said Monday.
In October Ottawa had appealed a 2019 follow-up order to pay each affected child $31k, after a 2016 tribunal had ruled that fewer federal funds were allocated to Indigenous people for child and family services.
That appeal has now been paused while initial complaints are dealt with. Earlier this year hundreds of unmarked graves were found at former residential schools where many indigenous children were sent and suffered alleged malnourishment, beatings and sexual abuse.
