A drug bust in Massachusetts this week didn’t come up short, turning up roughly 300 grams of fentanyl, around a kilogram of cocaine and approximately $82,000 in cash, according to authorities.
Throughout early June, a trooper assigned to the state police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team (CINRET) received information from a reliable confidential informant about a person suspected of illegally carrying a gun and trafficking narcotics in Brockton, according to the statement. Araujo was eventually identified as the suspect.
Over the course of the investigation, state police said, investigators developed probable cause that Araujo was “actively engaged” in drug trafficking. Early Wednesday, the trooper sought and received a search warrant from Brockton District Court for the Brockton man’s home.
Around 10 a.m., officers and troopers from CINRET, the state police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team and the Brockton Police Department’s narcotics unit set up surveillance around the address, according to authorities. Within an hour, Araujo was seen exiting the home, detained and advised of the search warrant.
Authorities Wednesday morning searched the apartment of 36-year-old Amilton Araujo inside 285 Plain St. in Brockton and found the fentanyl, cocaine and cash. They also seized a loaded .22 caliber handgun and ammunition, roughly 13 pounds of marijuana, packaging materials, miscellaneous paperwork, digital scales and a cellphone, Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.
Authorities then entered the home. Araujo stayed there while investigators completed their search, state police said.
After the search, Araujo was arrested and taken to the Brockton Police Department, where he was booked and is being held pending bail, officials noted.
He is set to be arraigned in Brockton District Court on the following charges: trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl, trafficking more than 200 grams of cocaine, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and possession of Class D drug with intent to distribute.
