5-Year-Old Boy In Critical Condition After Cardiac Arrest & Injures From Alleged Abuse

Kentucky State Police arrested Clovis Smith, 25, and Satrina Layne, 23, both of Rineyville, on Sunday. Smith is the child’s father and Layne is his girlfriend.

An arrest slips says that the child went into cardiac arrest multiple times before they were taken to Norton’s.

The child had bruises from head to toe and was malnourished, only weighing 32 pounds, police said.

The slip said that the doctor told the officer that the child was in critical condition and was “highly concerned” that child abuse could be a factor.

During an interview with Layne, police said she admitted to handling the boy roughly, telling them about multiple times where she physically hurt him. She also told them she has witnessed Smith punch the child.

When police interviewed Smith, he told them he found the child not breathing, surrounded by vomit, and called the child’s mother at work. He did not call 911, police said.
