One person is dead and four law enforcement officers are injured following a shooting incident on Saturday.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Melissa Underwood said the shooting occurred Saturday morning at a residence in a rural area south of Topeka.

“After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted,” Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith said. “The suspect died from injuries he received from a gunshot wound.”

KBI Director Tony Mattivi said the suspect was shot and killed at the scene. He was identified as 22-year-old Stephen McMillan.

A second male civilian was wounded. Authorities say their condition is stabilized.

Authorities also say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

“Multiple, multiple law enforcement agencies responded immediately when the call went out,” Mattivi said. “We want to thank all of those departments for their assistance.”
