3G Network Shutdown to Disable Millions of Safety Alarms, Cars, Medical Devices
Experts have warned anything from prisoner ankle tags to medical monitors and GPS systems could switch off when the 3G mobile networks are shut down later this year.
AT&T’s is scheduled to shutdown on 22 Feb, while others are staggered until December, as Internet providers switch to faster 4G & 5G signals.
While mobile phones will be easy to replace, other devices could be left marooned – meaning huge sums for customers to upgrade, potentially for life-saving tech.
The number of vehicles and car-related equipment hampered by the change was estimated at 80 million back in 2019.
Tesla, Nissan, Toyota and Lexus are among those potentially impacted according to consumer reports.
It’s claimed around 1.5MN burglar alarms and security systems will also need upgrades.
