Three-year-old twins have been pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in the backseat of a car parked on Interstate 95 in Miami in the early hours of Friday morning, authorities said.
An adult woman, reportedly the twins’ mother, was confirmed to be the driver of the vehicle. She was critically injured after jumping off an overpass when first responders arrived.
Miami-Dade County Police said officers responded to a call for a medical emergency on a northbound I-95 ramp to the Turnpike Extension around 2 a.m.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, “located in the backseat of the vehicle,” Detective Andre Martin told reporters. They were transported to a nearby hospital but were declared dead.
According to Martin, officers also saw the driver of the vehicle, an adult female, go “over the railing to the on-ramp onto the railroad tracks, which is a considerable distance.”
The woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
While authorities have not confirmed the names of the victims, nor how the woman and the kids are related, family members have since identified the woman as 42-year-old Shirlene Alcime, the mother of the twins, according to NBC South Florida.
Investigators believe she jumped off the overpass in a suicide attempt.
