Around 7:15 p.m., officers received a call about a shooting in the 800 block of 27th Street in Kenner, Louisiana.
Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in the driveway of the residence. Inside the home, his 3-year-old son was found fatally shot in a bedroom.
Investigators say the man, identified as 39-year-old Melvin McClinton, Sr., was involved in a physical altercation with the child’s mother before arming himself and shooting the boy. He then exited the home and shot himself.
The boy was pronounced dead on the scene. McClinton Sr. was reportedly unresponsive but still breathing. He was taken to a hospital where his condition is unknown as of Thursday morning.
The victim was identified as 3-year-old Carmelo McClinton.
Family members told police that McClinton Sr. was struggling emotionally and mentally with the loss of his 18-year-old son, Melvin McClinton, who was fatally shot in Kenner earlier this month on February 5.
