Erin Brunett, a 3-year-old Louisiana girl who authorities say was abducted from her Loranger home last week and found dead in the woods outside of Jackson, Mississippi, appears to have died from suffocation, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said in a press conference on Monday afternoon.
“We are waiting on the forensic pathologist,” Wade noted. “I would assume — and this is clearly an assumption — that she possibly died from asphyxiation or suffocation but we would have to wait on the medical examiner before we release that information.”
“I did not see any gunshot wounds or anything like that,” he added.
Two suspects, Daniel Callihan, 36, and Victoria Cox, 32, have been arrested in connection with Erin Brunett’s death and are facing counts of capital murder and sexual battery, which could lead to either capital punishment or a life sentence.
Wade declined on Monday to elaborate on what led to the sexual battery charges.
Erin Brunett and her sister, Jalie Brunett, 6, were allegedly abducted from their home in Tangipahoa Parish, where their mother, Callie Brunett, 35, was found dead from multiple stab wounds on Thursday morning.
Callihan also faces counts of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery in Louisiana, authorities said.
