Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a structure fire near Kiowa and 14th.
Firefighters found smoke in the basement and first floor of a victorian house that was converted into six apartment units.
“It was challenging for us to get a good search of all of the apartments very, very quickly,” said Lt. Jamie Gutschick of CSFD.
Three people were injured in this fire, with one taken to the hospital and two treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
Three cats were found dead, but firefighters were still searching the area for more animals Sunday morning.
“It took us approximately 55 minutes to get the fire under control… Due to the construction of older homes on this side of town, the fire can get into the walls and in between the floor spaces, so we had a little bit of that,” said Gutschick.
The cause of this fire is still under investigation. Eight adults and one child are out of their home after this fire.
The Red Cross is on scene helping those displaced.
