Sheriff deputies and medical first responders were dispatched to the Perry Place Apartments off Perry Street in Pontiac, Michigan.
Upon arrival , they found a child who was reportedly unresponsive and not breathing. Emergency crews found his mother attempting to perform CPR on the 3-year-old when they arrived.
An ambulance rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim was identified as 3-year-old Zaveion Thomas.
Investigators say Zaveion Thomas’ injuries were consistent with assault and his death was ruled a homicide. The boy’s mother was ruled the main suspect and authorities issued a warrant for her arrest.
On June 14, the mother, 27-year-old Latonya Shante Thomas, is charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse.
Latonya Thomas remained in the Oakland County Jail on $1 million bond after her arraignment.
She faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole if convicted of the murder charge.
