According to police, a white Dodge Charger and a yellow Chevrolet Camaro were heading eastbound on Vanowen Street, approaching Chimineas Avenue “at a high rate of speed.”
That’s when police say the driver of the Charger changed lanes and collided with the Camaro, causing both vehicles to lose control and crash with multiple cars.
Officials said a nearby hydrant was sheared off by the impact.
The driver of the Camaro, described only as a 32-year-old man, died at the scene.
Two people had to be extricated from one of the cars involved using hydraulic rescue tools. A total of 11 people were evaluated at the scene, including the victim who died.
Six people were taken to hospitals and the rest declined to be transported.
The driver of the Charger, identified as 21-year-old Nicolas Velasco Marcos, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
He was later arrested and booked for murder. He’s being held on $2 million bail.
“Drivers are reminded to use extra caution on the road, pay attention to the road, and always drive at a safe speed for the road conditions,” said police in a statement.
“Driving in a reckless manner is against the law and it carries serious consequences. When you drive recklessly, you are not only putting your own life in danger, but that of other innocent people.”
