When a mother and her young son were found dead inside their Manchester, New Hampshire, apartment in December, investigators could tell right away that something had gone terribly wrong. But now, nearly three months later, state authorities have finally confirmed the gruesome circumstances behind their sudden deaths. According to the Manchester Police Department, 25-year-old Mercedes Tremblay and her 2-year-old son Mason died as the result of a murder-suicide.
It was then that police officers were asked to perform a welfare check at a residence on Bodwell Road in Manchester after relatives could not make contact. Once they arrived, they quickly found Mercedes Tremblay’s body.
The young mother was found lying on her bed, dead of an apparent gunshot wound, but just a few feet away, they stumbled upon an even more disturbing sight. Her 2-year-old son Mason was also found dead, though the cause and manner of his death would be closely safeguarded as the investigation continued.
Brendan told police officers that Tremblay had “a variety of mental/emotional issues” and that her son “cries and does not want to go with her when she picks him up,” according to a previous police report. He also claimed to have seen the mother mistreating her toddler on several occasions, both physically and verbally.
As for Tremblay’s mother, Wilkens-Hickey, she indicated at the time that she too was concerned about her daughter’s mental health but ultimately had empathy for her.
In the same report, she told police that she “realizes some of the struggles [Tremblay] is facing and, at the end of the day, is still her daughter and wants to help her in any way possible.”
Sadly, it seems that help came too late.
