Two people are dead and three children under the age of 13 were injured in a shooting on Berkshire Avenue Monday afternoon.
Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni declined to call the crime a murder-suicide but called it a homicide and said the suspect is dead.
Police were called to a two-family home 174 Berkshire Ave. at about 2:40 p.m. to find the crime. They taped off the home and two houses on either side and closed the street for about three hours while they cared for the children and started the investigation. The area is north of St. Michael’s Cemetery and east of Springfield Central High School.
The victim who died at the scene was described as an adult woman.
Gulluni did not explain the relationship between the woman and the children but law enforcement officials said she was their grandmother and was babysitting while the parents were at work.
The three children were brought to the hospital. Two suffered gunshot wounds and at least one girl was critically injured and the other received serious gunshot injuries. The youngest child, a boy, was not shot, but brought to the hospital to be examined, law enforcement and neighbors said.
Two children were in surgery Monday afternoon.
