A 17-year-old boy was killed after being struck by an SUV while lying in a roadway in north suburban Niles early Monday.
According to a statement from Niles police, emergency responders discovered the critically injured boy lying in the roadway in the 8200 block of West Ballard Road shortly before 2:30 a.m.
Paramedics took the Niles boy to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
According to investigators, the boy was already lying in the roadway when he was struck by a 2007 Nissan Xterra traveling east on Ballard Road. The 21-year-old driver told police he didn’t realize he had hit someone.
Officials believe the driver was not intoxicated at the time of the accident and that he is cooperating with the investigation.
During the investigation, the road was closed for about four hours on Monday morning, but it has since reopened.
It was unclear why the boy was lying in the road, according to authorities.
