US Heads Major NATO Naval Exercise in Mediterranean
A US Navy carrier strike group is set to lead a major NATO exercise in the Mediterranean Sea from Monday – which Pentagon spox John Kirby insists is not a knee-jerk reaction to rising tensions over Russia and Ukraine.
Kirby claims the exercise involving “coordinated maritime maneuvers, anti-submarine warfare training and long-range strike training” took two years of planning.
He didn’t confirm which other nations would also be involved but added that the exercises were designed to highlight NATO’s ability to coordinate “highest maritime strike capabilities… defense of the alliance”.
