A 12-year-old girl shot in the head and neck during the deadly mass shooting at a British Columbia school is now fighting for her life in critical care.
Maya, a student in Tumbler Ridge, was transported to Vancouver Children’s Hospital and is currently in critical care, according to a Facebook post from her mother, Cia Edmonds, and a GoFundMe campaign organized by Edmonds’ cousin.
Her mother shared the devastating update in a Facebook post following the shooting, which left nine people dead, including the shooter.
”Im writting this post sitting in Vancouver children’s hospital while my daughter fights for her life,” she wrote. “Today started as any other. [Now], however, my 12 year old daughter is fighting for her life while they try to repair the damage from a gun shot wound to the head. And one to the neck..”
“She was a lucky one, I suppose,” the mother continued. “Condolences to the other families during this tragedy… This doesnt even feel real… I never thought I would be asking for prayers.. but please please, pray for my baby.”
As PEOPLE previously reported, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Authorities said the suspected shooter was found inside the school with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. The suspect has been identified as a female, but a name or motive has not been publicly released.
In addition to the deceased, RCMP said two victims were airlifted to a hospital with “serious or life-threatening injuries,” while as many as 25 others were being assessed and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have identified the suspected shooter as 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar. Police said van Rootselaar is believed to have killed her mother and stepbrother at home in Tumbler Ridge before traveling to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where six others were fatally shot.
