An 11-year-old boy died after attempting a TikTok challenge known as “chroming” at a friend’s sleepover on Saturday.
Lancashire Police were called to the scene around noon where they found Tommie-Lee Gracie Billington unresponsive.
Authorities said Tommie attempted the TikTok challenge “chroming.”
Chroming, also known as ‘huffing’ involves inhaling the fumes from cleaning products or toxic substances to get high, according to the Times of London.
Inhaling these toxic chemicals can affect the nervous system, leading to slurred speech, dizziness and even death.
He was taken to a hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and died.
“He died instantly after a sleepover at a friend’s house,” said the boy’s grandmother, Tina Burns. “The boys had tried the TikTok craze ‘chroming.”
Burns told the Times of London that the hospital did everything to try and bring him back but nothing worked.
“He had a heart of gold just like his dad,” said Burns. “Our family is utterly devastated.”
The TikTok trend has led to numerous teen deaths around the world.
Tommie’s family wants the social media platform shut down and all others restricted from children under 16.
On Thursday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted to advance a bill that could ban the China-linked social media platform from all U.S. devices like phones and tablets. If the bill is approved, TikTok’s parent company will have 165 days to sell the app.
